The UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change was created by agreement between la Escola Superior de Comerç Internacional (ESCI) at the University Pompeu Fabra (UPF) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on December 17th of 2010. In May 2011, Dr. Pere Fullana i Palmer was appointed as its Director.
The idea of establishing this UNESCO Chair arose from the will of the Research Group on Environmental Management (GiGa), founded in 2004 by Dr. Pere Fullana i Palmer to expand and share knowledge on Life Cycle Assessment and its applicability to prevent and minimize climate change in a more international framework. As of 2011, GiGa is the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change.
The UNESCO Chair has participated and / or coordinated numerous national and international projects on life cycle analysis (LCA), ecodesign, green procurement and environmental communication (ecolabels) of products, carbon and water footprints, governance in environmental management and integration of social and economic aspects into environmental impact assessments. These projects, funded by both public and private entities, provide compatible solutions that are meeting the demands of the market, social expectations and respect towards the environment, integrating the three areas of sustainability.
The goal of the UNESCO Chair is to promote research, education, the establishment of cooperative networks and the generation of documentation aimed at sustainable development of products and processes worldwide. This allows a remarkably improvement of the life cycle methodology applied to climate change and its prevention, adding value to the state of the art. Furthermore, UNESCO Chair promotes activities in an international framework facilitating partnerships among worldwide well-known researchers and lecturers of Universities and other institutions from Europe, Latin America, Caribbean and Africa, and other regions the world.
The UNESCO Chair has created a spin-off in 2010, Cyclus Vitae Solutions, SL. Moreover, has founded the "Green Dot Observatory on Packaging Life Cycle” funded by Ecoembes and Sociedade Ponto Verde. UNESCO Chair is the only Spanish partner at the Life Cycle Initiative of the United Nations Environment Programme and the Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (UNEP-SETAC).
