Summary

SOFIAS, funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness for a period of three years (2011-2014), aims to develop a software to assist professionals in the construction sector and public administration in the design and refurbishment of buildings (new or existing) with lower energy consumption, lower emissions of greenhouse gases and less environmental impact throughout their life cycle.

The software will easily allow identifying critical points in terms of materials, systems or processes throughout the life cycle of a building. It will also provide information, reliable and verifiable, on how to reduce environmental and economic impacts during its life cycle.

The software will combine the functions of assessment, assistance in the eco-design phase, and issuing energy and environmental certificates (carbon footprint, primary energy consumption and environmental declaration of building). Combining all these functions in one tool on line is very unique, which will allow the users of the software to be at the cutting-edge of innovation.

Objectives

  • Design and develop an experimental prototype software to assist professionals in the design and refurbishment of buildings to reduce the environmental impact throughout their life cycle.
  • Promote energy efficiency in new and refurbished buildings with life cycle perspective (not only in the use phase).
  • Promote the exchange of information and knowledge between the different key stakeholders involved in the value chain.
  • Develop a simulation module to calculate the optimal parameters that the building should meet to minimize primary energy consumption and economic costs during the entire lifecycle.
  • Create templates for the following environmental certificates related to the building´s life cycle: carbon footprint, primary energy consumption and Environmental Product Declaration.
  • Collect quantitative environmental information, verified and consistent, on the main products and processes involved in the life cycle of buildings. This information will be key for calculating the impacts of the building.
  • Identify the best available technologies and ecodesign key strategies in building, evaluating them both environmentally and economically wise. 

Methodology

The software will be based on existing standards and methodologies related to the assessment of environmental impacts of buildings throughout the Life Cycle: ISO 14040 and 14044 standards for Life Cycle Assessment, ISO 14025 on Environmental Product Declarations, draft rules of CEN TC 350 on EPD and sustainability assessment, draft standard ISO 14067 on Carbon Footprint, as well as the methodology for environmental and economic impact assessment developed under the project CÍCLOPE (2009 - 2010). The software will take into account the methods for calculating energy performance in the use phase and energy certification of buildings.

The users of the software will get the following benefits:

• Software platform easy to use and available on-line which will provide key information that will be used from the strategic point of view, commercial and operational.

• In the design phase, dynamic assessment of more efficient eco-design alternatives from a technical standpoint, environmental and economic improvement of the environmental performance of buildings throughout their life cycle.

• In the exploitation phase, the calculation of the real consumption of energy and water and emissions of greenhouse gases associated, will help to validate and renew environmental certification (Environmental Declaration, carbon footprint or primary energy).

• Able to offer rigorous and credible information to their customers, the public administration and the general public about the environmental impacts of their buildings throughout their life cycle.
