Food waste under debate

Awareness-raising events organised by various institutions will take place across Europe to reduce the hazardousness of waste generated and thereby avoid harmful effects on human health and the environment.


From November 17 to 25, 2018, the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) will encourage the implementation of awareness-raising actions about waste reduction, product reuse and material recycling strategies, and related European Union and Member States policies. In addition to promoting sustainable actions to reduce waste and change the Europeans’ behaviour regarding consumption and waste management patterns.

On the occasion of this initiative, the UNESCO Chair of Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF organises the "Integral Strategies for Food Waste Prevention" Day to be held next Thursday November 22. This awareness-raising action also includes the visit to ECOPARQUE 4 and the Packaging Sorting Plant, the Integrated Treatment Plant for municipal waste in the metropolitan area of Barcelona.

The Day will consist of the presentation of the environmental impact associated with the production and consumption of food, the relationship between diet and climate change or what are the waste generated in the flights and possible improvement strategies, to discover first-hand the work performed by the Chair through the experience of two research projects: Ceres-ProCon* and Life Zero Cabin Waste**. The first one, at the national level, aims to establish food production and consumption strategies to mitigate climate change, and the second, at the international level, intends to create a sustainable model designed to reduce, reuse and recycle the waste generated in aircraft cabins.

In order to foster debate among universities, consumers and companies on how to address the prevention of food waste along the entire value chain, a roundtable will be also held to share practical experiences, challenges and opportunities for the application of proposed strategies.

This initiative is the result of a 3-year project supported by the LIFE + program of the European Commission and since 2008 it has been held in Catalonia under the coordination of the Agència de Residus de Catalunya (ARC).
