UNESCO Chair ESCI-UPF’s researchers participate at 2018 Rebuild Expo & Congress

The UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF is participating in the three-day event aimed at the construction industry in Barcelona.

REBUILD is a unique innovation platform to invigorate the sector of the rehabilitation, construction and energy efficiency.

Construction21 Spain, the Spanish platform for sustainable construction managed by the Chair, is also participating in the event.

Rebuild Expo & Congress 2018.

Today sees the start of the Rebuild Expo & National Congress of Architecture 4.0 and Advanced Construction 2018, a unique platform of innovation to invigorate the sector of construction, renovation and the energy efficiency of houses and buildings in which the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF is participating. During the three-day event, the Barcelona International Convention Centre (CCIB, in its catalan acronym) will host new construction companies, developers, rehabilitation companies, architects, builders, and installers to boost the construction industry. The Spanish platform for sustainable construction managed by the Chair, Construction21 Spain, will also be attending the Congress to show new materials, the latest emerging technologies and the most innovative construction systems.


Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in the building sector

On September 26th, Pere Fullana i Palmer, director at the Chair, will take part in the ‘Interior design & HVAC Services & New Materials’ session dedicated to ‘Convert an existing building into an efficient building and the Law of Climate Change and Energy Transition’, to be held at the Constru Innovation Theatre from 10 to 11 hours. “One of the best options when rehabilitating or renovating a building is to improve it energetically, increase the flexibility of its spaces and lower the media usage. In short, convert a building into an efficient machine,” as stressed by organisers.

As part of this session, Fullana i Palmer will explain why circular economy needs the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology for an holistic approach that includes the analysis of the environmental impacts of products, services and business models. In the building sector, “when choosing between two materials, with respect to the environmental considerations, attention should be focused on system’s function, rather than the material,” he explains.

 

Construction21 Spain at REBUILD

On September 28th, the Construction21 Spanish platform will present its best case studies in the ‘Building 4.0’ session, from 13 to 14 hours. The Construction21 Spain presentation will consist of an introduction to its mission by Jaume Albertí, leader of the Sustainable Construction and Energy Research Line at the Chair, and the dissemination of the Green Solution Awards 2018 winners. The architects responsible for the selected case studies will present: the new construction building Aulario IndUVA, winner of the Sustainable Construction Grand Prize; the renovation building Carrer Nou, winner of the Sustainable Renovation Grand Prize; and the urban reconversion PASAPAS_Projects of Social Action through Participation, Architecture and Sustainability, winner of the Sustainable City Grand Prize.

Construction 21 is a network which serves as a platform for local and international sustainable construction-based companies to network, build relationships, share fresh ideas, experiences and practical solutions in the evolving sustainable construction industry. It was created in 2012 in collaboration with six national platforms in France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Romania and Spain. It launched a central multi-user platform in English connected to BUILD UP, the European Commission website dedicated to Energy efficiency in buildings. It has since expanded into 11 countries, and translated to 9 languages, throughout Europe and Asia and America on the path to its goal: reach 50 platforms across the world by 2020.
