The director of the Chair joins the second “Foro de Energía y Desarrollo Sostenible” in Valencia

The Forum aims to generate a debate on the integration of energy policy and sustainable development in the European Union.

The energy production and consumption on a global scale generate a significant  impact on the environment.  In order to carry out a sustainable lifestyle, what would be the most convenient energy model for our society? This issue is the vertebral axis of the second “Foro de Energía y Desarrollo Sostenible” (Energy and Sustainable Development Forum), celebrated this Tuesday December 12 at the Valencia Chamber of Commerce. The event is mainly addressed to companies and institutions related to sustainability and environment such as universities, trade unions , NGOs or research groups like the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF with its director, Pere Fullana, as representative and speaker during the sesion.

The Forum is part of a broader  project, which includes dissemination initiatives and a workshop about the sustainable development and energy model, financed  by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, specifically  the Secretariat of State for the European Union (EU), in collaboration with Iberdrola. The purpose of the initiative is to disseminate European Union policies on energy and sustainable development. Following this line, the Forum aims to generate a debate about the strategies proposed by the EU, taking into account sustainability and the current  model of energy management, with the aim of getting closer to sustainable development.

 

Impacts caused by the use of energy

The Forum programme of activities has been extended during the morning, starting with an official presentation about the content of the Forum followed by three informative conferences. The first two, focused on the energy strategy in the EU and its current implementation measures. The third, led by Pere Fullana, focused on the impacts generated by the use of energy in the environment. “The environmental impacts with respect to the use of energy are manifested through different impact categories, among which we not only find climate change but also phenomenons such as acid rain or non-renewable materials, among others. These impacts come not only from the use of energy but from all stages of its life cycle. Therefore, when deciding between different energy use options, the best method is the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA),” explains the Chair’s director.

Finally, the director has presented the ARIADNA Project, the most comprehensive study on DRS carried out to date in Europe, devoted to analyse the environmental, economic, and social sustainability of the implementation of a mandatory Deposit and Return System (DRS – in Spanish SDDR) in Spain and Catalonia. Also, he has explained the project entitled “Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of Plastic Composites with Mineral Fillers Applied to Different Food Packaging" for GCR Group® - Granic.

After the presentations, the debate table “Energy and sustainability” has had the intervention of various experts, culminating the act with an open discussion as a conclusion.
