The ARIADNA study at the UGT - Ecoembes Conference "The Environment unites us"

On October 19, Ecoembes and UGT jointly organised the conference "The Environment unites us".

The director of the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF, Dr Pere Fullana, has participated in the session through the presentation of the ARIADNA Project.

On October 19, the Ecoembes and UGT joint conference “The Environment unites us" brought together about 100 environmental union delegates from all over Spain, with the aim of promoting selective waste collection and take care of the environment. Dr Pere Fullana, director of the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF, has participated in the session through the presentation of the ARIADNA Project, which analyses the environmental, economic, and social sustainability of the implementation of a mandatory Deposit and Return System (DRS – in Spanish SDDR) in Spain.

During the conference, Juan Ramón Meléndez, Institutional Relations Manager at Ecoembes, has explained the Collective System of packaging recycling in Spain and how Ecoembes and UGT can combine their efforts to promote eco-design, recycling and environmental awareness. Outstanding personalities such as the General Secretary of UGT, Josep Maria Álvarez and the Secretary of Occupational Health and Environment, Ana García de la Torre, have participated in the session.

Dr. Fullana has explained the usefulness of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), used as a tool to assess the environmental impacts of a product, process or activity throughout its life cycle. The Chair’s director has also presented the ARIADNA Project, the most complex sustainability study on DRS carried out to date in Europe.

 

The ARIADNA Project

The ARIADNA Project. “A sustainability study on the implementation of a mandatory DRS for packaging in Spain: a comparative environmental, social and economic analysis vs the existing system" compares the current system of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for managing the waste with a hypothetical situation of both systems (ERP and DRS).

With the participation of a monitoring committee, including more than 30 entities and organisations representing the parties involved in waste management, the study also includes a critical review by a panel of nine independent experts. The full report of the project has been published in the channels of the Chair for public exposure. For any doubt or comment, there is a web form available and managed by the research team responsible for the study.

 

UGT - Ecoembes Conference

The session was a "successful call", according to the organisers, with a lively debate. The closing ceremony, carried out by the Director of Institutional Relations and Adhered Businesses at Ecoembes, Begoña de Benito, and the General Secretary of UGT, Josep Maria Álvarez, ratified the interest of both organisations in working together on promoting selective waste collection and take care of the environment, especially in the autonomic territories.
