Dídem Civancik presents the project “New Design Refuse Bag” in Barcelona Fira

Didem Civancik, researcher of the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change ESCI-UPF, attended the 10th World Congress of Chemical Engineers, which took place in Barcelona Fira from 1 to 5 of October. The World Council of Chemical Engineering (WCEC), the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE) and the European Society of Sciences of Biochemical Engineering (ESBES) promoted this congress "three in one" together with the taxpayers from all over the world. The objective of this international congress was to find innovative solutions to respond to the main social challenges, in the areas of chemical engineering. Other issues like use of resources, the environment and sustainability were also discussed. During the congress, a wide variety of sessions, lectures, oral presentations and PhD workshops took place.

Civancik made the presentation named “Environmental improvement of a polyethylene refuse bag by adding a mineral filler (Granic 1522): a Life Cycle Study”, explaining the production of new design refuse bag that mix plastic components with minerals. In a context of progressive extinction of fossil fuel reserves and taking into account its high environmental impact, the design of this new bag can be key to a greener future.

Civancik presented the comparative study of the conventional refuse bag with the new design bag, the results of which show that the new design allows a notable environmental improvement in all the evaluated impact categories and this improvement was found to have an average of 20%. As being one of the mostly known environmental impact category, 20% improvement was achieved in global warming potential.

The company that has developed the design of these new bags is the Tarragona Company GCR Group, which works for the main transformers of plastics for industrial, food and cosmetic use. The advantages provided by the GCR Group products have allowed the company to grow through export in recent years, operating in more than 100 countries on all continents.
