After four years of hard work, Spain, Portugal and Germany have developed an ad-hoc flexible, user-friendly and scientific robustness software tool (so called FENIX tool) for assisting Spanish and Portuguese local municipalities and waste management entities in evaluating alternative scenarios for the management of packaging waste, enabling the selection of more sustainable waste management practices.

 The FENIX TOOL, which is easy to use even for non LCA experts, allows comparing up to three different and independent waste management scenarios. Dr Pere Fullana, Director of UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change, explains that a large number of parameters can be introduced and modified by the users, such as (km travelled, selection between different collection and treatment options, plant efficiency, etc. to adapt the models created in the tool to the real situation.

This ambitious project, which at the same time is an excellent example of international cooperation, is being coordinated by the UNESCO Chair, jointly with three other partners: Ecoembes, Sociedade Ponto Verde and PE International. FENIX, which required experts on applying the methodology of Life Cycle Assessment but also experts on Life Cycle Assessment, worked closely with 13 collaborators from technological centers and research institutes in Spain and Portugal. Moreover, independent experts have also been involved in key phases of the project, being the majority of them members of the Group of International Experts in LCA and Waste Management.
